Android, Google, and T-Mobile

Google and T-Mobile will announce the first Android-based phone tomorrow. I own an iPhone but I am very interested in the Android platform.

Hopefully, we'll get answers to these questions on Tuesday:

Calendar support: can a user sync the phone's calendar directly with Google Calendar via an Internet connection (over the air)?

Contacts support:  can a user sync the phone's contact list directly to GMail's contacts via an Internet connection (over the air)?

Data synchronization:  does the phone support the SyncML protocol?

Push email:  does the T-Mobile Android phone support push email?

Video capture:  can the T-Mobile Android phone record video? Does the phone enable one-click uploads to YouTube?

Video content:  will users be able to download videos from YouTube and store them on the phone for local playback?

Music store:  will there be a Google Music Store?   If not, who is providing a music store?  Amazon.com?

Bluetooth:  are Bluetooth keyboards supported?  Is A2DP supported?

Tethering:  can I tether a laptop to the phone?

Software updates:  how the user install software updates?  Is there a desktop application to enable this?   Does the user get the updates from T-Mobile or from Google?

Voice over IP (VOIP):  is VOIP a standard feature for end users?   Will there be VOIP libraries/APIs included in the Android platform?

GrandCentral:  what is the relationship between Google's GrandCentral service and the Android platform?   Are these products connected?

GPS:  will the T-Mobile Android phone include GPS?

Advertising:  will Google and T-Mobile offer an ad-supported calling plan option?

Here are a few bold predictions:

1)  Google will allow users to transfer YouTube video content to Android phones. End users will be able to watch this video content without a network connection.

2)  The T-Mobile Android phone will support video capture.  It will be trivial to upload videos to YouTube.

3)  Google will integrate GrandCentral with Android phones.    This will be available in 2009.

4)  VOIP will be a standard feature on Android phones in 2009.
